How to Turn Your iPod touch into an iPhone 4G Edition

The latest iPhone and iPod touch are nearly identical devices, ignoring the pesky reality that the latter isn't a phone. We can fix that. Here's how to turn your iPod touch into a viable (and cheaper) iPhone alternative out of the box.

Back in the day, turning your iPod touch into an iPhone required a jailbreak, but now, thanks to some wonderful apps and other tools, using your iPod touch as an iPhone alternative is a easy ( no jailbreak )

The iPhone and iPod touch have always been similar devices, but now that Apple's added a front-facing and regular camera to the iPod touch, they're practically identical. You can even make video calls on both devices. The only real missing feature is the phone. Thanks to VoIP (Voice over IP) apps like Skype and Line2 (see more details below), you don't even need to jailbreak to solve that problem.

Although it's easier than ever to use your iPod touch as a full-fledged iPhone, there's still a little work involved. You'll need the right apps and potentially some extra hardware. Let's take a look at your options and how you can work around the shortcomings of an iPod touch-turned-iPhone.

Fake iTunes Receipt Leads To Malware

Sometimes technology can become a threat to your safety and well-being. Certain popular websites or services can easily be used by hackers to gather personal and valuable information. This kind of scenario took place multiple times up to this date and as technology evolves the abilities and expertise of hackers will as well. PandaLabs has recently announced that it has discovered fake  iTunes receipts which started being sent to users in an attempt to gather and steal personal data

According to PCMag, the attack vector is via Flash, a technology that the  Cupertino-company was reluctant to use for a long period of time, because of its alleged security weaknesses. A while back, Apple’s CEO  Steve Jobs made an official announcement on the company’s website regarding Apple’s products which according to him wouldn’t include support for Flash from Adobe because the technology is believed to be closed, unstable and antiquated. Adobe didn’t seem to be bothered by this and responded that it’ll focus its whole attention on apps for Google’s Android mobile platform. The research division of antivirus company Panda Security, called PandaLabs discovered that users are sent an electronic receipt from iTunes which looks completely authentic.

Apple Modifies App Developer License, Allows Third Party Development & Analytics Tools

In a significant move, Apple has announced that it is making several changes to its App Store Review guidelines that could ease the restrictions that are currently in place to develop third party iOS apps.

These revisions will make it possible for app developers to use third party development tools and compilers like Flash-To-iPhone compiler as long as these applications do not download any code.

The latest change should particularly affect developers who make use of third party compilers on their apps. You may recall that Apple had banned the use of such third party compiler tools earlier this year close on the heels of the launch of Adobe's Creative Suite 5 application. The CS5 platform introduced a Flash-to-iPhone compiler that made it possible for app developers to bring Flash to the iPhone.

Imitation versions of the iPad have been spotted on the streets of Beijing.

The fakes run Android, and cost between $125 and $200.

No matter how hard it is to get the new “it” gadget of the moment, no matter how much you see those first few units selling for on eBay, no matter how long the backorder waits get, odds are that there will be a fake version of it waiting for you on the streets of Beijing.

There is a certain warped logic to it. China is the world’s largest manufacturer, and most of the hot electronic devices that we salivate over are at least partially (if not totally) manufactured there, so it makes sense that China would also be a world leader in black-market forgeries. The newest confirmed fake on the market is the iPad, which can be yours for$125 after a little bit of haggling.

Chinese iPod gadget aims to skin Apple

The "Apple Peel 520" -- a converted iPod Touch that makes calls
is an example of China's growing "shanzhai" market.
(CNN) -- Have you ever wished that your iPod Touch was an iPhone? Now it can be, thanks to a new device called the "Apple Peel 520" and created by a Chinese company.

Invented by a 22-year-old programmer who lives in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen, the gadget is comprised of a case that fits around the outside of Apple's iPod Touch, a popular media player and Wi-Fi-enabled pocket computer with e-mail, maps and other applications.

The Apple Peel 520 case contains a battery, dock connector and SIM card that allows voice calls. Users will also have to install special software to enable a text messaging function, and to allow the device to properly work with the iPod Touch (users will have to break into the software of the iPod in order to download the necessary applications).

iPhone and iPad Apps More Integrated with Facebook

Facebook has launched a new software development kit (SDK) for Apple's iOS operating system, which powers the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. This is an update from the previous SDK launched for the iPhone last March.

"With today’s update we’ll have SDKs for both iOS and Android devices that provide an even easier way for mobile app developers to go social," a Facebook representative tells WebProNews.

The two main features that make the new SDK a step up from the previous iPhone OS SDK are use of the Graph API, which lets developers integrate Facebook's Open Graph into their apps, and authentication with OAuth 2.0.

add more sources to iPhone and iPod Touch apps

Even though I don’t own an iPhone or iPod Touch myself, I’ve played around with a good number of them and in this post I’m going to describe how to add more sources to your iPhone or iPod Touch installer so that you can have more  applications and themes to use on them.
If you’re not sure what an iPhone source is, let me explain. On the iPhone and iPod Touch there is an option called Installer, which allows you to add more applications to your iPod outside of the default apps that come with it. However, to install more apps, you first need to tell the iPod the location whereby it can download these third party apps. That is what an installer source is.
The source is usually an Internet address (URL) that you simply need to type into your iPod Touch or iPhone while it is connected to the Internet. It’s a pretty simple process of adding installer sources to your iPod, so here’s how to do it:

How to Jailbreak iPhone

It is no secret that iPhones are expensive. One feature that makes iPhones even more expensive, especially on eBay, is when the phone is Jailbroken.
Jailbreaking an iPhone allows you to not only use the phone on any wireless service, including T-Mobile and Sprint, it also allows you to download a wealth of apps not found in the iTunes app store—some of which offer valuable features, such as the ability to turn your iPhone into a mobile, WiFi hotspot.
So, is it worth the money to buy a jailbroken iPhone? Yes, and no. Yes, the features are worth the cost…but no, you do not need to buy an iPhone that is pre-jailbroken. Instead, a two minute download and installation process is all you need.
The program that can nearly instantly jailbreak an iPhone is called BlackRa1n. It is completely free, funded only through donations from happy customers.
First, go to BlackRa1n.com and click the icon for your operating system. There are versions for both Windows and Mac.
