Steve Jobs Confirms Screen Rotation Lock Will Be Mute Switch From iOS 4.2; Can't Be Customized

When Apple introduced the iPad back in January 2010, it was shown to come with a hardware switch on the side that was labeled as a mute button. At the time of the launch in April however, Apple mysteriously changed the mute switch to the screen rotation lock switch. Many users welcomed this change as they would have used the mute option far less when compared to the orientation lock switch. Some others were however disappointed.

Things were going well until Apple issued a much awaited update to iOS 4.2 beta. In that update, Apple changed the orientation lock button back to a mute button for reasons bets known to them.

This has upset many iPad users who're looking forward to update their iPads. There was however a ray of hope for some people who expected Apple to give them an option to choose what the hardwarebutton on the side would do for them on their iPad - at least when the final version of iOS 4.2 for the iPad arrives sometime in November.

However, that hope seems to have been shattered when none other than Apple CEO Steve Jobs in reply to an e-mail from a customer confirmed that at least for now, you would not be able to choose what you want that button to do for you.

Fake iTunes Receipt Leads To Malware

Sometimes technology can become a threat to your safety and well-being. Certain popular websites or services can easily be used by hackers to gather personal and valuable information. This kind of scenario took place multiple times up to this date and as technology evolves the abilities and expertise of hackers will as well. PandaLabs has recently announced that it has discovered fake  iTunes receipts which started being sent to users in an attempt to gather and steal personal data

According to PCMag, the attack vector is via Flash, a technology that the  Cupertino-company was reluctant to use for a long period of time, because of its alleged security weaknesses. A while back, Apple’s CEO  Steve Jobs made an official announcement on the company’s website regarding Apple’s products which according to him wouldn’t include support for Flash from Adobe because the technology is believed to be closed, unstable and antiquated. Adobe didn’t seem to be bothered by this and responded that it’ll focus its whole attention on apps for Google’s Android mobile platform. The research division of antivirus company Panda Security, called PandaLabs discovered that users are sent an electronic receipt from iTunes which looks completely authentic.

Microsoft gives up on Live Spaces

Blogs to be shifted to Wordpress.com

The software giant appears to have decided that hosting blogs isn't the way to get ahead - and is passing its 7m users (and ad revenues) to the blogging company

Microsoft is closing its Windows Live Spaces blogging platform and moving all its users over to Wordpress.com. It's a dramatic move which means that it's giving up a potentially huge slice of advertising business - perhaps because it simply can't make it pay.
Or as Microsoft puts it, "partnering together" - redundant word alert - "and providing an upgrade for 30 million Windows Live Spaces customers".
Make no mistake, this is dramatic: it means that Microsoft is giving up potentially valuable turf where it could have sold ads, in the manner of Google and the Blogger platform (which generates revenues for Google), and retreating from at least one part of the online space.

Five new phishing scams to watch out for

Phishing is the term that describes the illegal attempt to steal sensitive information from unsuspecting people, most frequently over the internet.

It often seeks to trick people into submitting their account passwords, banking or other financial information, or the answers to security questions. While some of the scams are clearly identifiable, due to their lack of professional appearance or poor grammar, others are sophisticated enough to create a money-making opportunity for the criminals behind the scams.

Here are some of the newest scams to watch out for.

1. Web Browser Hijacking and Scareware

Hijacking occurs when malicious software that redirects web searches to fake websites is installed on a computer. For example, a pop-up ad that appears to be from a reputable internet security software company may indicate that your computer is under attack. Once the unsuspecting person clicks on the scareware message he is redirected to a fake website offering for purchase special software to combat the threat.

Hacker Spoofs Cell Phone Tower to Intercept Calls

by security researcher Chris Paget, center. (Photo: Dave Bullock)
LAS VEGAS — A security researcher created a cell phone base station that tricks cell phones into routing their outbound calls through his device, allowing someone to intercept even encrypted calls in the clear.
The device tricks the phones into disabling encryption and records call details and content before they’re routed on their proper way through voice-over-IP.
The low-cost, home-brewed device, developed by researcher Chris Paget, mimics more expensive devices already used by intelligence and law enforcement agencies – called IMSI catchers – that can capture phone ID data and content. The devices essentially spoof a legitimate GSM tower and entice cell phones to send them data by emitting a signal that’s stronger than legitimate towers in the area.

Google Encrypted Search

Google users can now run encrypted searches using the company’s flagship search site simply by navigating to https://www.google.com.
UPDATE: Many users are being redirected to the non-encrypted main site — a function of Google rolling this out to all its servers. Also it is necessary to include WWW. Don’t assume your searches are encyrpted, unless the url starts with HTTPS and you see the lock icon.
The move brings the same web security system that protects online banking, website logins and shopping to search — a first for a major search engine.
The encryption makes it incredibly difficult for anyone in between your computer and Google’s servers to see what search terms you use or what results Google sends back. Additionally, when you click through a search result on Google’s new secure page, your browser will not send along “referrer data” revealing the search terms you used.
