CDMA iPhone Hits Final Field Testing Stage, iPhone 5 Hits 'Engineering Verification Test' Stage?
We have some new and exciting information regarding two things that we have been hearing about for the past few weeks. First, it's the CDMA iPhone that is touted to arrive on Verizon's network in the near future. The other is about the next generation iPhone.
Boy Genius Report claims that according to a trusted Apple source, iPhone model 3,2, which was until now, widely believed to be the CDMA iPhone headed for Verizon, has just entered the “AP” testing stage, which is the final field testing stage before the device is launched

As for the iPhone 3,2 moniker, you might want to recall that the first generation iPhone was internally known as the "iPhone 1,1", the 3G was known as "iPhone 1,2", the iPhone 3GS was "iPhone 2,1" and the latest iPhone 4 is internally known as "iPhone 3,1" - which is why it it is quite clear that iPhone 3,2 is undoubtedly a new iPhone model, probably a variation of iPhone 4.
Prototypes that have reached the AP stage come with the final hardware and software that you later see in the commercial versions – except for some minor changes.
The iPhone 3,2 model will apparently come with a SIM card slot just like the GSM iPhone 4 that is available currently.
BGR speculates:
- This is interesting for a multitude of reasons, and presents several different scenarios:
- The iPhone 3,2 could be the mythical CDMA + GSM/HSPA device that would support Verizon, AT&T, and the other current worldwide iPhone 4 carriers frequencies. The mid-cycle refresh would bring an updated antenna design for the current iPhone 4 and bring CDMA-compatibility; essentially, Verizon Wireless subscribers would have the same device as AT&T subscribers.
- The iPhone 3,2 could be a CDMA-capable iPhone that houses a SIM card for global roaming capabilities; though that certainly seems more complicated than just having one single glove that would fit both hands.
- One last possibility that the iPhone model 3,2 would simply be a slightly different design that doesn’t suffer from the same antenna attenuation as the current model; though that would be a little disappointing.
The other big news is the fact that Apple has already started work on the iPhone 5 (probably stating the obvious) and it has reportedly reached the “EVT” stage in its development cycle. EVT means the Engineering Verification Test stage, which is followed by DVT (Design Verification Test) stage.
