It can be alarming to hear any strange noises coming from your hard drive. (Clicking, Grinding or extremely noisy hard drives are indications of a more serious issue.) Hard drives can make some noise during normal operation.
However, it is imperative that if you do hear any strange sounds coming from your hard drive, to turn the computer off immediately. These types of sounds can indicate a mechanical failure with the hard drive. Keep in mind that hard disk drives do contain moving mechanical pieces that will wear out over time and with usage.
By turning your computer off as soon as possible, you reduce the risk of doing further, possibly irreparable damage to the media. (The surface of the platters inside of the hard drive, onto which your data is written to.)
Below are a few examples of noises that could lead to, or indicate a hard drive failure

If your drive is making any of these sounds or any uncommon noise, TURN IT OFF and disconnect it immediately before there is any further damage
