It happens to the best of us – getting locked out of our computers. Sometimes, if you get your Windows pre-installed, you might really have no idea what the default administrator account is or its password. So how do you get the password or bypass it. Here are two nifty software applications that can help you.
The first application’s called Ophcrack. It’s a free and open source Windows XP and Vista password cracker that uses rainbow tables to crack the password. It does involve cracking and a bit of brute force so speed and effectiveness isn’t a 100% guarantee. Here’s how to use it.
- Download an appropriate version of Ophcrack.
- If you downloaded the LiveCD version, burn the download to a CD.
- Download the rainbow tables (this will provide a library of the possible combinations to crack the password).
- Run the software. It has a graphical user interface that’s quite user friendly to crack the password.
- Use the rainbow table if prompted.
The other options if Offline NT Password & Registry Editor. Unlike Ophcrack, this nifty app can even work around Windows 7′s password authentication. Here’s how to use it.
- Download the ZIP file. This contains a .ISO file so you have to burn it to a CD. An app like DeepBurner will do the job quite nicely.
- Boot the computer using the CD.
